ABOUT THE BOOK Udayarpalayam Aranmanai stands at the confluence of time, memory, and stone. Tucked within the semi-arid plains of the Ariyalur district, this palace complex has survived centuries of dynastic transition, colonial restructuring, and post-independence neglect. Yet it endures its lime-plastered walls still carrying the faint imprints of floral stucco, its barrel-vaulted corridors still echoing with the spatial logic of a civilization that once mapped the cosmos into the proportions of a courtyard. This book emerged from a sustained engagement with the Aranmanai through field documentation, archival research, stakeholder conversations, and architectural drawing. It seeks to go beyond the conventional boundaries of a thesis report to offer a comprehensive narrative of Udayarpalayam's history, culture, architectural character, and political significance. The ambition is not merely to document what remains, but to understand what it once meant and, by extension, what it may yet become. The book is organized as a ten-chapter study spanning two volumes. The first volume, presented here, covers the deep historical roots of the region (Chapter I), the rise and genealogy of the Palaiyakkarar rulers (Chapter II), the political transition from Poligar chieftaincy to Zamindari estate under colonial rule (Chapter III), the spatial and chronological evolution of the palace complex (Chapter IV), and the architecture, stucco works, and engineering systems of the Aranmanai (Chapter V). The second volume will address the climatic intelligence of the structure, its condition assessment, the statement of significance, and frameworks for its conservation and adaptive reuse. The story of Udayarpalayam is inseparable from the broader story of Tamil Nadu's intermediate heritage those countless palace complexes, temples, stepwells, and fortified towns that stand outside UNESCO designation and national protection lists, yet form the living sinew of regional identity. This work hopes to contribute to a growing recognition of such heritage, and to the communities whose lives and memories are intertwined with it.
