Description
Fundamentals of Engineering Chemistry: Bonding, Solids, Water and Phase Equilibria brings together four topics that sit at the base of a first-year engineering chemistry course.
The book opens with chemical bonding, developing molecular orbital theory from the LCAO principle through the homonuclear and heteronuclear diatomic molecules to the bond orders and magnetic behaviour their orbital diagrams predict. The second unit turns to the solid state: the band theory of solids, liquid crystals and their classification, point defects, the structure of graphite, fullerenes and nanomaterials. The third takes up water analysis — the impurities water carries, hardness and its estimation by the EDTA method, the units in which hardness is reported, boiler troubles, and the zeolite, lime–soda, ion-exchange and reverse-osmosis processes used to treat water in practice. The fourth introduces the phase rule and applies it to the one-component water system.
Each unit is written for the classroom. The theory is developed step by step and carried by the authors’ own molecular orbital diagrams, structural drawings, comparison tables and worked numerical examples, and every unit closes with an exercise of examination-style questions, so that the book serves equally for teaching, revision and self-study.
